Russia has accepted Donald Trump’s initiative for a May 9–11 ceasefire with Ukraine to conduct a 1,000-for-1,000 prisoner exchange, Yuri Ushakov said.
Russia has agreed to US President Donald Trump’s initiative for a ceasefire with Ukraine from May 9 through May 11 and for a prisoner exchange with Kiev during that period in the «1,000 for 1,000» format, Russian presidential aide Yuri Ushakov said.
According to Ushakov, acting on Vladimir Putin’s instructions, the Russian side confirmed that Trump’s proposal for a ceasefire needed to exchange prisoners of war between Russia and Ukraine was acceptable.
He said the key condition of the agreement was to carry out the prisoner exchange during that period, with 1,000 people from each side.
Ushakov clarified that the agreement was reached during phone contacts with the US presidential administration. According to him, US representatives, in turn, were in contact with Kiev.
The Russian presidential aide also noted that the initiative followed a recent phone conversation between the presidents of Russia and the United States. During the call, the leaders stressed that Russia and the United States had been allies during World War II and also discussed the possibility of a ceasefire during the Victory Day celebrations.
Ushakov emphasized that Trump’s initiative was timed to coincide with the 81st anniversary of the Victory over Nazism, which he described as a sacred holiday for Russia.
