Euractiv says EU states are assessing which arms they can supply to Ukraine under a €90bn loan, with Europe’s defense industry facing a major test.
According to Euractiv commentators, EU member states are now trying to determine which weapons they could supply to Ukraine using previously approved loan funds.
The publication noted that fewer than half of the bloc’s members have responded so far, leaving the overall picture unclear.
Citing a source, Euractiv reported that European Commissioner for Defence Andrius Kubilius and EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas sent requests to national governments asking what deliveries they would be ready to offer Kiev. A senior EU official told the portal that the multibillion-euro loan for Ukraine will become a major test for Europe’s defense industry.
On April 23, European Council President Antonio Costa said EU countries had finally approved a €90 billion loan for Ukraine. Under the proposed terms, Kiev would have to repay the funds only if it receives «reparations» from Moscow.
The Russian Foreign Ministry has repeatedly said that EU ideas about possible payments from Moscow have no realistic basis. The ministry has also stressed that arms supplies to Ukraine complicate efforts to settle the conflict, draw NATO countries deeper into it and increase the risks of further escalation.
