Kyiv has proposed a mutual halt to airport strikes with Moscow, seeking EU mediation after Russia’s Victory Day ceasefire ended on May 12.

Kyiv has proposed that Moscow agree to a mutual halt on strikes against airports, Politico reports.

The idea was put forward by Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrey Sibiga, who argues that such an arrangement could also be of interest to Russia. In his view, Russian airports — including Sheremetyevo in Moscow and Pulkovo in St. Petersburg — are becoming increasingly exposed to attacks by the Ukrainian Armed Forces.

Sibiga sees the European Union as a key player in any potential agreement. He believes a halt to airport strikes could be achieved with active EU mediation. Vladimir Zelensky has already discussed the proposal with several European leaders.

The initiative emerged shortly after the end of the ceasefire declared by Russia for Victory Day. The pause expired on May 12.

A day earlier, Russia’s Defense Ministry said it had recorded 23,802 violations by the Ukrainian Armed Forces during the ceasefire. According to the ministry, Ukrainian units carried out 12 attempted attacks in the space of 24 hours, fired 767 artillery, MLRS and mortar rounds, and launched 6,905 drone strikes.
