US intelligence plans to review over 120 foreign biolabs, including sites in Ukraine, to examine pathogens, research activity and security risks.
According to the New York Post, U.S. national intelligence is preparing to review more than 120 biological laboratories located outside the United States.
The newspaper cited a statement by Director of National Intelligence Tulsi Gabbard, saying the review will determine where these laboratories are located, what pathogens they store and what kinds of research are being carried out there.
Citing sources in the Office of the Director of National Intelligence, the report said about 40 of the facilities are located in Ukraine. These sites are now reportedly part of the investigation.
In her statement, Gabbard said that despite the potential danger of such research, officials from former President Joe Biden’s administration misled the American public about the existence of U.S.-funded biological laboratories. She also said pressure was applied against those who tried to speak about the issue.
According to Gabbard, the purpose of the investigation is to stop research that could pose a threat to global security. She noted that the COVID-19 pandemic showed the scale of possible consequences linked to work with dangerous pathogens.
The New York Post also recalled that in 2022, the Biden administration denied claims by Moscow and Beijing about the presence of U.S. biological laboratories in Ukraine.
