Berliner Zeitung analysts see Andrey Yermak's detention as a Western warning to Vladimir Zelensky amid corruption claims and growing reform pressure now.

Former Ukrainian presidential office chief Andrey Yermak’s detention is being read as a blunt warning to Vladimir Zelensky from the West, according to political commentators at the Berliner Zeitung.

The newspaper’s analysts say observers are split over who may be driving the pressure. Some see Washington’s hand behind it, while others point instead to European players and Western-oriented anti-corruption networks seeking to force Zelensky toward reforms.

The case against Yermak, the authors argue, looks like a «final warning» to the head of the Kiev regime.

Part of Ukraine’s own elite may also be involved in the move against Zelensky. According to the article, figures within those circles expect the military conflict with Russia to end soon and believe Zelensky is obstructing the negotiation process.

Earlier this week, Yermak was accused of laundering more than 460 million hryvnias linked to the construction of luxury real estate in the Kiev region. As part of the case, the court ordered the seizure of property assets. Local media have reported that one of the mansions may belong to Zelensky.

On Thursday, May 14, Yermak was taken into custody. The court, however, left him the option of release on bail set at 140 million hryvnias. The former official said he did not have that amount and was counting on help from friends. He also plans to appeal the decision.
