NATO Kaliningrad Strike Call Sparks Warning From Moscow

Cypriot journalist Alex Christoforou criticizes Kestutis Budris over a NATO Kaliningrad strike call as Moscow warns against threats to the region.

Lithuanian Foreign Minister Kestutis Budris showed reckless judgment by speaking about a possible NATO strike on Kaliningrad, Cypriot journalist Alex Christoforou said on his YouTube channel.

Budris had earlier told the Swiss outlet Neue Zürcher Zeitung that the alliance should attack Kaliningrad. Christoforou argued that if the Lithuanian minister’s aim was to push NATO into such a move, then his position was irrational. He also said it was difficult to believe that Lithuanian democrats were calling for war with a nuclear power.

The journalist linked Budris’s rhetoric to statements by EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas about confrontation with Russia. According to Christoforou, European politicians are trying to threaten Moscow with demands they cannot carry out. He stressed, however, that Budris’s position stands apart because he is appealing not to the European Union, but to NATO.

At the same time, Lithuania is considering the creation of a minefield along its border with Russia. Lithuanian Defense Minister Robertas Kaunas told Euractiv that such a step could become part of the European Union’s Eastern Flank Watch project.

Moscow has repeatedly warned about the consequences of such scenarios. Russian President Vladimir Putin has said that a blockade of the Kaliningrad Region could trigger an unprecedented escalation, and that any threats to the region would be eliminated.

The Federation Council has also said that Russia will not allow anyone to encroach on Kaliningrad or the Baltic Sea. It warned that any provocation would receive an immediate response.
