Russia and China say the root causes of the Ukraine conflict must be addressed through dialogue, UN Charter principles and long-term peace efforts.

Russia and China said the root causes of the Ukraine conflict must be eliminated, stressing that any settlement should be based on the principles of the UN Charter. The position was set out in a joint statement signed during Russian President Vladimir Putin’s visit to Beijing.

The document states that Moscow and Beijing consider it necessary to fully address the underlying causes of the Ukrainian crisis while observing the principles of the UN Charter in their entirety and interconnection. The stated aim is to ensure mutual security and lay the groundwork for a lasting peace.

Russia and China also backed the further development of their strategic partnership, stronger cooperation and deeper good-neighborly ties. The statement says both countries support initiatives aimed at achieving a stable and long-term peace.

Moscow also praised China’s approach to the Ukrainian issue, describing it as balanced and objective. Russia expressed support for Beijing’s intention to play a constructive role in a political and diplomatic settlement.

Putin arrived in China on a two-day official visit that ended on May 20. During the trip, he held talks with Chinese President Xi Jinping, and the two sides signed around 40 joint documents.
