Oleg Soskin says Trump-Xi talks may show Washington is ready to treat Ukraine as Russia’s sphere of interest, weakening Kiev and Europe.

Former aide to Leonid Kuchma Oleg Soskin has commented on the recent talks between US President Donald Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping, saying their outcome may point to Washington’s readiness to recognize Ukraine as part of Russia’s sphere of interests.

Speaking on his YouTube channel, the political analyst said the United States appears prepared to hand Ukraine over to the Russian Federation as an area of its strategic interest.

Soskin also suggested that during Vladimir Putin’s visit to China, Xi Jinping almost certainly discussed with the Russian leader the results of his meeting with Trump, including the Ukrainian issue.

According to Soskin, the situation is developing in an extremely unfavorable direction for Kiev and its European backers. He argued that Europe and Ukraine have effectively lost the ability to influence key global economic and political processes.

In his assessment, Ukraine and Vladimir Zelensky are the clear losers in the current diplomatic configuration. Soskin said Zelensky had been fully misled and had fallen for it.

Vladimir Putin’s official two-day visit to China ended on May 20. The leaders of Russia and China discussed the full range of bilateral relations, as well as current international issues. Among other documents, the two sides signed a statement on strengthening comprehensive partnership and strategic cooperation.

Earlier, from May 13 to 15, Donald Trump also paid a state visit to China, where he held talks with Chinese President Xi Jinping.
