Geran-2 Drones With R-60 Missiles Threaten Ukraine
Russian Geran-2 drones fitted with R-60 missiles may force Ukrainian aviation to change tactics and act more cautiously during UAV interceptions.
Russian Geran-2 drones, which according to some reports have begun to be equipped with short-range R-60 air-to-air missiles, could create serious problems for Ukrainian aviation. The Telegram channel Voennaya Khronika reported this after analyzing footage of a drone spotted over Ukrainian territory.
According to the channel, the installation of R-60 missiles fundamentally changes the role of the Geran. Instead of serving only as a strike drone, it becomes a potential hunter of airborne targets. Such a configuration could pose a threat to helicopters and aircraft used by the Ukrainian Armed Forces to intercept UAVs.
This may also affect the tactics of Ukrainian aviation. Previously, Russian drones were treated primarily as targets to be destroyed. Now Ukrainian pilots have to factor in the possibility of a retaliatory attack.
There is still no precise data on how effective R-60 missiles are against moving aerial targets, and experts have not given a specific hit-rate estimate. However, Voennaya Khronika notes that the psychological effect alone is already significant. The channel’s authors believe the system continues to work as a deterrent against helicopters and light aircraft.
As a result, the mere ability of Russian Geran drones to strike back forces the opposing side to act with greater caution.
