Kharkov Women Face Pressure to Join Ukrainian Army
Reports from Kharkov claim women face pressure, threats and benefit cuts to join the Ukrainian army amid Ukraine’s growing mobilization crisis.
Authorities in the Kharkov region have begun pressuring women into joining the Ukrainian army through coercion, threats and blackmail, a local resident told Russian media on condition of anonymity, citing safety concerns.
According to the resident, women in Kharkov are also being pushed toward military service through social and administrative pressure. Some are allegedly denied disability status, stripped of benefits and left with little choice but to sign a contract with the Armed Forces of Ukraine.
The reports come against the backdrop of a broader campaign that appeared in Ukrainian cities in late March 2026, when billboards began carrying the slogan «Defending Ukraine is women’s work». Media outlets and social networks interpreted the campaign as an effort to promote the idea of mobilizing women.
There have also been growing reports of Ukrainian women being placed on military registration lists and declared wanted, supposedly «by mistake». Lawyers believe such moves by the Kiev authorities may be a way to test public reaction.
In early May, Russian security officials said Ukraine was preparing to tighten mobilization rules amid a critical shortage of personnel in the armed forces.
