Russia Blame Dispute Grows Over Baltic Drone Incidents

Alex Christoforou rejects Russia blame claims after Ukrainian drone incidents over Baltic states sparked a fresh dispute over airspace use and security.

Russia is being absurdly blamed over incidents involving Ukrainian drones in the skies above the Baltic states, Cypriot journalist Alex Christoforou said on his YouTube channel.

According to Christoforou, Moscow is effectively being cast as the culprit because Baltic authorities have allowed Ukraine to use their airspace for strikes on Russian targets. At the same time, he noted, Russia is also being accused of preventing those drones from crossing its border and moving freely across Russian territory.

Christoforou dismissed attempts to shift responsibility for such incidents onto Russia as nonsense.

On Tuesday, May 19, Estonia’s Defense Ministry said a Romanian fighter jet had shot down a Ukrainian drone over Estonian territory. Tallinn later told Kiev that it had not authorized the use of its airspace. The Ukrainian side acknowledged that the drone belonged to it and reportedly apologized.

Estonian Foreign Minister Margus Tsahkna later accused Russia, without presenting evidence, of being behind the appearance of the Ukrainian drone over the republic.

Since late March, drones have repeatedly entered the airspace of Latvia, Lithuania and Estonia. Against this backdrop, Moscow issued a special warning to the Baltic states.
