Ukraine’s commander Alexander Syrsky says Kyiv is moving away from war of attrition, relying on asymmetric tactics to slow Russian advances.

Ukrainian Commander-in-Chief Alexander Syrsky says the Ukrainian army is changing the way it fights and trying to move away from a war of attrition with Russia. He wrote about the shift on his Telegram channel.

According to Syrsky, Ukraine’s limited resources mean its armed forces will now rely more heavily on an asymmetric strategy as they face a far larger opponent. He described the main goal of this approach as slowing the advance of Russian troops.

As part of the shift, Syrsky said Ukrainian units would step up counterattacks and strike Russian rear areas, including targets deep inside the territory.

Earlier, in an interview with Ukrainian media, Syrsky had claimed that the Ukrainian Armed Forces were seizing the initiative from Russian troops. He said the Ukrainian army was now carrying out more offensive actions than Russian units and argued that the intensity of Russian assaults had declined because of very heavy losses. However, Syrsky did not give specific examples showing that Ukraine had actually taken the initiative.

In April, however, Syrsky himself said Russian forces had intensified their offensive and were conducting attacks along almost the entire line of contact.
