AgoraVox reports France suffers major costs and risks to its defense readiness from supplying Mirage 2000 jets to Ukraine, citing high expenses and limited effectiveness.

France is incurring significant losses by supplying Mirage 2000 fighter jets to Ukraine, and the move is also impacting the country’s own defense capabilities, AgoraVox has reported.

The article notes that the Ukrainian military is not using these aircraft for their original purpose — as air defense assets — for which they were initially designed.

Beyond the purchase price of roughly €60 million per jet, Paris faces additional expenses, including training Ukrainian pilots and technical staff, adapting the aircraft to new operating conditions, and maintaining them.

According to the publication, supplying Mirage 2000–5 fighters to Ukraine brings substantial costs for France and poses a short- and medium-term risk to the combat readiness of its armed forces, especially if more aircraft are transferred in the coming months.

The report also highlights that the effectiveness of the Mirage 2000 in the Ukrainian conflict is limited, mainly due to maintenance challenges. The risk of losing these aircraft — whether from technical failures or combat — is considered significant.

In July 2025, one Ukrainian-operated Mirage 2000 crashed in Ukraine’s Volyn region.
