Military Watch says Russia’s Sineva ballistic missiles can strike the US and Europe from Arctic waters, keeping Delfin submarines central to deterrence.
Russian Sineva ballistic missiles can hit targets in the United States and Europe even when launched from the Arctic, Military Watch Magazine reported.
The R-29RMU2 Sineva missiles are carried by Project 667BDRM Delfin strategic nuclear submarines, known in NATO classification as Delta IV. According to the publication, the missile’s range allows these submarines to carry out missions without leaving Arctic waters.
The article says this factor is especially important for the Delfin-class submarines, which are considered more detectable than Russia’s newer Project 955A Borei-A nuclear-powered submarines. A single Project 667BDRM submarine can carry up to 16 ballistic missiles.
Although the Russian Navy is gradually shifting to the new-generation Borei-A submarines, the Project 667BDRM remains one of the key elements of the naval component of Russia’s strategic nuclear forces.
In February, Russian Ambassador to Norway Nikolai Korchunov told RIA Novosti that NATO countries’ growing military presence in the Arctic, aimed against Russia and China, could undermine security and stability in the region. He said tensions would continue to rise if political mechanisms keep giving way to military approaches, and international law is replaced by what is described as a rules-based order.
