Russia’s FSB says a terrorist attack was prevented on the gas carrier Arrhenius in Ust-Luga after divers found explosive devices on the hull.

Russia’s Federal Security Service said it had foiled an attempted terrorist attack on the gas carrier Arrhenius at the port of Ust-Luga in the Leningrad Region. The vessel had arrived from Antwerp, Belgium, to take on cargo and was then due to head to Samsun, Türkiye.

According to the FSB’s public relations center, the operation was carried out jointly with the Investigative Committee, the Defense Ministry and the National Guard.

During an inspection of the ship’s underwater hull, divers found foreign objects attached with magnets near the engine room. The items bore signs of explosive devices.

An interagency explosives team later examined the objects using an underwater drone. The FSB said they were identified as explosive devices designed in the manner of naval magnetic mines. According to preliminary assessments, they may have been manufactured in a NATO country using industrial components.

Each device contained around seven kilograms of plastic explosive, the agency said.
