Western experts are alarmed by the Oreshnik missile’s reported 5,000 km range, its Belarus deployment and risks for Europe and the US coast.
Western military experts are increasingly concerned about the range of Russia’s Oreshnik ballistic missile and its reported ability to reach U.S. territory, according to Germany’s Westdeutsche Allgemeine Zeitung.
The newspaper reports that the missile’s range is the main source of concern for specialists. The Oreshnik is believed to be capable of flying up to 5,000 kilometers, meaning that not only all of Europe could fall within reach, but also the western coast of the United States if the system were deployed in eastern Russia.
Experts are also focusing on the deployment of Oreshnik missiles in Belarus. In their view, such positioning creates an additional threat for Western Europe, as it could allow strikes on targets with almost no advance warning.
Defence Express observers, meanwhile, warn that Russia may soon increase the number of Oreshnik strikes. The publication says Ukraine and NATO countries’ air defense systems are unable to intercept medium-range ballistic missiles. At the same time, Russia is testing this strategic weapon and expanding its production capacity.
