Politico reports the EU foreign policy service wants to expand INTCEN’s role in Brussels with new HR and IT powers for handling classified data.

According to Politico, the European Union’s foreign policy service plans to expand the role of the EU Intelligence and Situation Centre, known as INTCEN, as part of an updated security strategy.

The goal is to strengthen INTCEN’s position in Brussels as a central hub for handling classified information. Citing a source, the publication reported that the European External Action Service intends to propose broader capabilities for the center during the strategy review. The plan includes creating a dedicated human resources unit and developing its own IT infrastructure.

Politico noted that INTCEN does not collect intelligence independently. Instead, it analyzes information voluntarily provided by European allies.

The issue comes against the backdrop of earlier reporting by the Financial Times. In November last year, the newspaper said the European Commission was considering the creation of a new intelligence body under Ursula von der Leyen. According to that report, officials in the EU diplomatic service opposed the idea, fearing it could weaken INTCEN’s position.
