The Trump administration’s strategy to reduce U.S. military forces in Europe sparks division within the Pentagon. A 30% troop cut is under consideration. Full details inside.
According to The Washington Post, the administration of U. S. President Donald Trump has developed a strategy to partially reduce the American military presence in Europe. The report also notes that this proposal has already sparked divisions within the Pentagon.
Recently, U. S. Secretary of Defense, Mark Esper, called an urgent summit with senior military leaders from around the world, set to take place in Virginia on September 30. It is expected that during this meeting, the Secretary will present his plan to reduce the U.S. military footprint in Europe.
Sources indicate that Esper is rethinking America’s military priorities, focusing more on domestic security threats, reducing competition with China, and minimizing the U.S.'s role in both Europe and Africa.
This strategy has faced significant opposition from high-ranking officers, including General Dan Kain, Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff. Critics argue that the plan is «short-sighted and possibly outdated».
According to the sources, the Pentagon could cut the number of U.S. troops in Europe by as much as 30%. Currently, the U.S. military presence in Europe stands at between 90,000 and 100,000 troops, with around 35,000 of them stationed in Germany.
