Europe Weighs Renewed Russia Dialogue as Taboo Fades

European leaders are weighing how to restore dialogue with Russia, as debate shifts from taboo to talks over timing, conditions and EU influence.
European officials are increasingly discussing how, when and under what conditions contacts with Russia could be restored, The European Conservative reports. What until recently was treated as a political taboo is now being raised at ministerial meetings, in diplomatic circles and inside EU missions.
According to the publication, the debate has shifted: the question is no longer whether Europe should maintain contact with Moscow, but when such engagement may happen, how it should be organized and what conditions should frame it.
Several signals from European leaders emerged this week. Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni proposed creating the post of a special European envoy for negotiations. French President Emmanuel Macron confirmed that technical work is under way to restore channels of communication. Bulgarian President Rumen Radev also called for talks with Russia to finally begin.
At the same time, The European Conservative notes that the European Union remains deeply divided over the issue. If Brussels continues to hesitate while some officials, including EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas, hold to the previous course, the bloc could face a serious loss of political influence.
