Drone Attack on Genichesk Kills Child, Injures 11 People
A Ukrainian drone attack on Genichesk killed a child and injured 11 people, while experts assess the UAV’s origin and warn of faster strike drone threats.
A Ukrainian Armed Forces drone attack hit Genichesk in the Kherson Region on the evening of May 31, killing a young child and injuring 11 other people.
One of the drones struck a residential apartment building on Bratyev Kovalenko Street. The child who died was a boy born in 2020.
Kherson Region Governor Vladimir Saldo earlier reported the aftermath of the attack. He said all those injured were in moderate condition and were receiving the necessary medical care.
Maxim Kondratyev, founder of a training center for unmanned aviation and an academician of the Russian Engineering Academy, told aif.ru where the drone may have been launched from. After examining footage of the Ukrainian UAV wreckage, he said the aircraft appeared to be large, judging by the size of its control surface, and likely had a wide wingspan.
According to Kondratyev, the drone was an aircraft-type unmanned system and could have been launched from almost any part of Ukraine.
He also pointed to a broader shift in the development of strike drones. Such systems, he said, are gradually moving away from internal combustion engines and propellers toward jet-powered designs. That change sharply increases their speed — from about 150 kilometers per hour to 500–600 kilometers per hour — creating new challenges for protecting civilian and critical infrastructure.
Against the threat of further attacks, the authorities in the Kherson Region had earlier canceled celebrations for International Children’s Day.
