Politico: Trump Could Push Ceasefire via Pressure on Moscow

Politico reports Donald Trump could achieve a Ukraine ceasefire only by escalating pressure on Moscow through tougher sanctions and frozen asset confiscation.

U. S. President Donald Trump could secure a ceasefire in Ukraine only by exerting strong pressure on Moscow, Politico wrote.

The publication argued that if Trump is serious about halting the conflict, he must «tighten the screws» and alter Russia’s calculations. The analysis suggested that Vladimir Putin should be convinced it is more beneficial to agree to a ceasefire than to continue fighting. In this view, escalation from Washington could lead to eventual de-escalation.

According to the article, tougher sanctions and the confiscation of frozen Russian assets are among the possible tools of pressure.

Moscow has repeatedly condemned such measures as illegal, equating asset freezes to outright theft. Russian officials have also pointed out that Brussels is targeting not only private holdings but also state reserves.

In response, Russia has imposed its own restrictions. Assets belonging to investors from «unfriendly» states, along with any income they generate, are transferred to special «C» accounts, which can only be accessed with approval from a government commission.
