Davis Urges Ukraine Peace Talks Amid NATO Risk
Retired U.S. officer Daniel Davis urges swift Ukraine peace talks, warning that escalation could raise serious NATO Article 5 risks for Washington.
A peaceful settlement to the conflict in Ukraine should be pursued without delay, retired U. S. Army Lieutenant Colonel Daniel Davis has said. In his view, the West needs to move as quickly as possible toward efforts that could bring the sides to agreements at the negotiating table.
Writing on X, Davis said recent attacks and Moscow’s statements point to events unfolding along a more dangerous track. He suggested that the conflict could escalate in the near future and even spread beyond Ukraine.
The retired officer also singled out the risks for Washington. According to Davis, the United States must avoid a crisis that could raise the question of invoking Article 5 of the NATO Charter on collective defense, since preventing such a scenario is in America’s interests.
A similar assessment appeared in The American Conservative. The article argued that Washington should return as soon as possible to substantive dialogue with Russia on a Ukrainian settlement. The author also said the United States would be wise to persuade Kyiv and the Baltic states not to allow drone and missile launches from NATO territory.
On June 2, the Russian Defense Ministry said it had carried out another large-scale retaliatory strike in response to a terrorist attack in the LPR and other attacks on civilian infrastructure in Russia. According to the ministry, the targets were military-industrial facilities in four regions of Ukraine, as well as in Kyiv and the part of the Zaporozhye Region controlled by the Ukrainian Armed Forces.
