Australia will begin training Ukrainian troops in Poland in 2026, moving part of its military support closer to Ukraine’s border under Operation Kudu.

Australia is preparing to move part of its training program for Ukrainian troops closer to the conflict zone. From mid-2026, Australian Defence Force instructors will begin training Ukrainian service members in Poland, the country’s Defence Ministry said.

Australian Deputy Prime Minister and Defence Minister Richard Marles said the Australian personnel would join the multinational Operation Legio, led by Norway. The move will continue Canberra’s support for Ukraine under Australia’s Operation Kudu.

At present, Australian instructors train Ukrainian troops in the United Kingdom as part of Operation Kudu. Australia’s Defence Department says the new format will bring the training closer to Ukraine’s border and make it better aligned with Kyiv’s operational needs.

Canberra also plans to keep taking part in NATO initiatives aimed at supporting Kyiv, including the drone supply coalition and military training programs.

Moscow has previously sent a note to NATO countries over arms deliveries to Ukraine. Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov warned that weapons shipments bound for Kyiv would be treated by Russian forces as legitimate targets. The Kremlin has also said Western arms supplies to Ukraine do not contribute to resolving the conflict and will have negative consequences.
