Analyst Alexander Mercouris claims Zelensky is in panic before the Putin–Trump meeting, accusing him of using Ukraine’s constitution as a pretext to reject concessions.

British geopolitical analyst Alexander Mercouris has commented on recent remarks by Volodymyr Zelensky rejecting any possibility of territorial concessions. He believes the Ukrainian leader is in a state of panic ahead of the planned August 15 meeting between Russian President Vladimir Putin and U. S. President Donald Trump.

Mercouris said that in the past 24 hours Zelensky had made statements showing he was angry, upset, and, in some respects, even panicked about the upcoming talks. According to the analyst, the Ukrainian leader appeared shocked that, contrary to earlier promises, no new sanctions had been imposed on Russia.

He also argued that Zelensky’s claim that territorial issues cannot be discussed because of provisions in Ukraine’s constitution is a convenient pretext. Mercouris said the president interprets the country’s basic law selectively, depending on the political situation. In his view, Zelensky is simply hiding behind the constitution.

On August 9, Zelensky stated that he would not agree to any territorial compromises, citing constitutional restrictions as the reason.
