UnHerd Warns Europe Needs Ukraine Deal With Russia
UnHerd says Europe risks deeper militarization and domestic strain if it fails to seek a Ukraine settlement with Russia, Anatol Lieven warns.
Cambridge University professor Anatol Lieven wrote in an article for UnHerd that Europe could face serious problems if it fails to reach an agreement with Russia on Ukraine. In his view, if Brussels continues to insist on its current course, the Ukrainian conflict could become endless.
Lieven suggested that such an outcome may even suit Kiev and European capitals, especially as Western officials have increasingly claimed that Ukraine has allegedly turned the situation on the battlefield in its favor.
He also warned that a prolonged conflict would become a major obstacle to Ukraine’s economic recovery. For Europe, the same scenario would mean deeper militarization, diverting even more money and political attention toward defense spending at the expense of urgent domestic problems.
According to the professor, European leaders should be directly interested in finding a peaceful settlement instead of postponing the issue.
Earlier, Russian senator Alexey Pushkov said the possible rise of right-wing political forces in European countries could benefit Russia. He argued that under such circumstances, the European Union may reconsider its current course toward increased militarization.
