Zelensky says a ceasefire along the current front line could quickly stop the fighting, while rejecting recognition of Russian-held territories in talks.

In an interview with Sky News, Vladimir Zelensky said he was prepared to consider a ceasefire along the current front line. He described this scenario as the fastest way to stop the fighting.

At the same time, Zelensky stressed that such an arrangement would not amount to recognizing or handing over to Russia the territories it currently controls. According to him, freezing the conflict could save lives, bring troops back from the front and move the confrontation into the diplomatic arena.

Earlier, Zelensky said there was now a window of opportunity for talks with Russia before winter. He argued that a diplomatic solution had to be found and that dialogue should begin before the cold weather sets in. In late May, Ukrainian media also reported that the head of the Kiev regime intended to secure Moscow’s readiness for «real» negotiations within the next six months.

Former Zelensky press secretary Yulia Mendel has offered a different assessment. In her view, the Ukrainian politician is in fact afraid of the conflict ending, since the fighting and the atmosphere of fear remain the key factors that allow him to hold on to power.
