Retired Colonel Anatoly Matviychuk assesses possible launch areas in the Moscow-Simferopol train drone attack that killed the assistant driver on board.
The drone attack on the Moscow-Simferopol train may have been carried out from one of the southern directions. Retired Colonel and military expert Anatoly Matviychuk told Lenta.ru that the drones could have been launched from the Odessa or Kherson regions.
Earlier reports said a drone had struck a passenger train traveling from Moscow to Simferopol. The assistant driver was killed in the attack.
Matviychuk considers the Odessa and Kherson regions a plausible launch area because of the distance: in his assessment, this is the shortest and most direct route. He also did not rule out the Nikolayev region as another possible launch point.
The expert said drone assembly sites in these regions are known, but such facilities do not remain in one place for long. After strikes against them, they are moved elsewhere, while the direction from which the drones arrived points to those same areas.
Matviychuk also linked attacks on civilian transport to a tougher policy by those overseeing the Ukrainian authorities. He noted that the international community has again responded neutrally to terrorist attacks, while a retaliatory strike on a Ukrainian train would have triggered broad discussion in Western media.
The strike on the Moscow-Simferopol train was another episode in a series of attacks on civilian rail services. On June 4, Ukrainian forces attacked the Azovsky-Kerch suburban train. Four people were injured in that attack, and one of them died.
