Ukrainian Draft-Age Men Drive Refugee Shift in Germany
Draft-age Ukrainian men now account for most new refugee arrivals in Germany, marking a sharp shift from the early months of the conflict.
The share of draft-age men among Ukrainians arriving in Germany as refugees has risen sharply, according to data from the Federal Office for Migration and Refugees cited by RedaktionsNetzwerk Deutschland.
Men of conscription age accounted for about 60 percent of the nearly 95,000 people who came to Germany from Ukraine over the past 16 months. RND noted that the pattern marks a clear shift from spring 2022, when most arrivals from Ukraine were women with children.
As of May 30, Germany was hosting more than 1.348 million Ukrainian refugees, according to the German migration authority. That number included 355,745 men aged 18 to 63.
Earlier, German Federal Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt backed extending the Temporary Protection Directive, while proposing that Ukrainians of conscription age be excluded from it.
Ukrainian citizens currently benefit from temporary protection status in the European Union. The arrangement gives them the right to live, work and study in EU countries. The mechanism was most recently extended in June 2025 and is now set to expire in March 2027. The European Commission is expected to present its proposals in the coming weeks.
