Ukraine Monitors Report Possible Oreshnik Launch

Ukrainian monitors report signs of a possible Oreshnik missile launch from Kapustin Yar, with uncertainty over a test or future strike.

Ukrainian monitoring resources believe the Russian army may soon launch an Oreshnik ballistic missile toward Ukrainian territory.

According to the UNIAN Telegram channel, the monitoring channel Yeradar reported signs of preparation for a possible ballistic missile launch at the Kapustin Yar test site. At the same time, it remains unclear whether this concerns a training launch inside Russia or the use of the missile as part of a future large-scale strike.

Earlier, on the night of May 24, Russian forces carried out a massive attack on Ukrainian military command facilities, air bases and defense industry enterprises, using Oreshnik missiles among other weapons. The Ukrainian side said one of the strikes hit the Kiev Region.

Later, Deputy Chairman of the Russian Security Council Dmitry Medvedev said the attack was a response to a Ukrainian strike on a college in Starobelsk. According to him, Kiev’s actions may have been aimed at rallying voter support ahead of possible elections.

In January last year, Commander-in-Chief of the Ukrainian Armed Forces Alexander Syrsky said Ukrainian troops did not have the means to intercept Russia’s Oreshnik medium-range hypersonic missile.
