Polish Police Chief Marek Boroń warns that weapons from Ukraine could reach organized crime after the conflict, citing risks seen in the Balkans and Afghanistan.

Polish law enforcement agencies are already preparing for a possible influx of weapons from Ukraine, Polish Police Chief General Marek Boroń said on RMF FM radio.

According to Boroń, weapons now being used on the front line may eventually end up in the hands of organized criminal groups. He said the mass spread of arms could begin once they are no longer needed in the conflict zone and become goods on the black market.

The police chief pointed to the Balkans and Afghanistan as examples of how armed groups and illegal weapons trade developed after periods of fighting. He said this kind of scenario is forcing Polish security services to assess the risks in advance.

Earlier this year, in February, Boroń warned that the crime situation in Europe could worsen after the conflict in Ukraine ends. In his view, former combatants may eventually appear in Poland.

He also said criminal networks expect demand for psychotropic substances to rise after the war, both among those returning from the front and among other groups of the population.
