Danish Radio Says Russia Is Expanding Military Infrastructure Near Europe’s Borders

Danish Radio reports that Russia is expanding military infrastructure near Scandinavia and the Baltic states, while Moscow denies plans to attack NATO.

Danish Radio DR, citing intelligence chiefs from Nordic countries and senior NATO officers, claims that Russia is expanding its military infrastructure near the borders with Scandinavia and the Baltic states and is preparing for a possible major conflict in northern Europe and the Baltic region.

DR’s sources do not say that Moscow has already made a decision to start a war, but they believe Russian preparations for a potential confrontation with Europe are moving at an accelerated pace. In their assessment, the most dangerous period may be the next one to three years, while European NATO countries have not yet managed to build up the necessary forces, weapons stockpiles and military production.

The DR report is based on interviews with military and intelligence officials, NATO documents, threat assessments and satellite images which, according to the report, show the construction of new Russian bases and the expansion of existing facilities. Former Finnish intelligence officer Marko Eklund believes that after the end of hostilities in Ukraine, Russia could deploy about 115,000 troops near Europe’s borders and, if necessary, quickly transfer hundreds of thousands of combat-experienced soldiers there.

The shift from brigades to larger divisions is causing particular concern among the sources. NATO and Nordic countries interpret this as preparation for a long and large-scale conflict, not simply as a show of force.

Russian Ambassador to Denmark Vladimir Barbin rejected these claims and said that Moscow is not preparing an attack on NATO countries. According to him, such statements are used to intimidate Europeans and justify NATO and EU preparations for war with Russia.
