Ukrainian Forces Reportedly Use Scorched-Earth Tactics Near Kupyansk

Mash reports that Ukrainian units are setting fire to homes and farm buildings near Kupyansk to prevent Russian troops from securing new positions.

Ukrainian units in Kharkov region, according to Mash, have begun using scorched-earth tactics near Kupyansk. During their retreat, they are setting fire to residential houses and farm buildings so that Russian troops cannot use them to secure new positions.

Fighters of the 6th Army claim that about six months ago, the Ukrainian Armed Forces were expelling local residents from their homes en masse and setting up temporary deployment points there. Now, realizing that holding these areas is becoming increasingly difficult, Ukrainian formations are destroying the remaining property and making buildings unusable.

It is separately noted that Ukrainian troops used civilians as cover. According to Russian fighters, the Ukrainian Armed Forces could occupy one house while leaving civilians in neighboring buildings. This scheme limited the Russian side’s use of heavy artillery and aviation because of the risk of hitting civilians.

Reconnaissance and assault groups are now recording arson and destruction of property in the areas of Stetskovka, Redkodub and Shipovatoye. These actions, according to the report, are aimed at leaving settlements unfit for life and combat operations after the retreat.
