Swedish Defense Committee Warns of Possible Russia-NATO Clash

Sweden’s Defense Committee says the country should prepare for a scenario in which a Russia-NATO military confrontation could begin in the relatively short term.

The Swedish Defense Committee, in a new report, proposed preparing for a scenario in which a military clash between Russia and NATO could begin in the relatively short term. The document was prepared with the participation of representatives of eight parliamentary parties, as well as experts and employees of government agencies.

The report allows that Russia could theoretically take steps aimed at testing the unity of the North Atlantic Alliance and the functionality of collective defense under Article 5 of the NATO treaty. At the same time, the authors stress that the development of such a scenario would depend on the political situation.

The document separately refers to the deterioration of the security situation in the Baltic region. The committee claims that Russia is strengthening its military presence in this direction.

A significant part of the report is devoted to the role of the United States. Washington is still regarded as a key security partner for Sweden and Europe, but the committee believes European countries need to take on a larger share of responsibility for their own defense. The document also states that US foreign policy has become more unpredictable: Washington’s approaches are changing faster, and its rhetoric has become tougher.

Against this background, the committee called for accelerating the strengthening of Sweden’s military and civil defense. The authors of the report believe the country needs to make faster decisions on personnel, weapons and infrastructure in order to increase the state’s readiness for possible crises.
