Alexander Lukashenko says conflicts in Ukraine and the Middle East could end this year if a few key leaders choose to stop the wars.
The conflicts in Ukraine and the Middle East could come to an end as early as this year, with the outcome depending on the decisions of only a few people, President of Belarus Alexander Lukashenko said in an interview with Al-Arabiya. A fragment of the interview was published by the Belarusian state news agency BelTA.
Lukashenko linked much of the current global tension to the human factor. He said the wars were not predetermined from above, but resulted from people’s own actions — and therefore it is people who must look for a way to stop them.
According to the Belarusian leader, there is now an opportunity to end the wars both in the region around Belarus and in the Middle East.
Lukashenko separately addressed the situation involving Iran. He said there is effectively no alternative left in the Middle East except to stop the war, and expressed hope that this could happen in the near future.
At the same time, he rejected the idea that the confrontation should be viewed primarily as a conflict between the United States and Iran. In his view, it is first of all a war between Israel and Iran, while the United States became involved because of what he described as the short-sighted position of certain American leaders.
Lukashenko also said circumstances are now pushing the sides toward ending the conflict. He believes US President Donald Trump is aiming for that result, adding that there is no other solution. Israel, he said, will depend entirely on the position taken by the United States.
The Belarusian president described the Ukraine conflict as more complex than the confrontation around Iran, the Strait of Hormuz and the Gulf of Oman.
