Ukrainian Air Defense Gaps Exposed by Drone Misses

Ukrainian air defense units face equipment shortages, causing drone interception failures and strikes on residential areas, commander Rustam Mustafaev says.

Ukrainian mobile air defence fire teams do not always have the equipment needed to accurately hit Russian drones, which can lead them to strike residential buildings and other civilian facilities instead. The statement was made by Rustam Mustafayev, commander of an interceptor battalion in the Ukrainian Armed Forces’ Unmanned Systems Forces.

According to him, there are no formal legal restrictions preventing air defence units from destroying drones over residential areas, since martial law is in force in Ukraine. Mustafayev said that military personnel would not be held responsible for such consequences.

He also pointed to serious equipment shortages among Ukrainian mobile fire groups. More than half of these units, he said, lack high-quality thermal imaging sights, night-vision sights and target detection systems.

Mustafayev acknowledged that this leads to many rounds missing the Shahed — the name used in Ukraine for Russian Geran strike drones — and that stray fire can damage civilian and other facilities.

In early June 2026, Vladimir Zelensky said Ukraine’s air defence system was unable to effectively repel Russian attacks because of supply shortages.
