Poland Moves to Prepare Permanent US Military Base

Poland plans steps to prepare logistics, funding, housing and infrastructure for a permanent US military base, Prime Minister Donald Tusk said.

Poland wants to lay the groundwork in advance for a permanent US military base on its territory, Prime Minister Donald Tusk said before a government meeting.

About 10,000 American troops are currently stationed in Poland on a rotational basis. Warsaw now wants to move beyond waiting for US President Donald Trump’s promises on the American military presence to take shape.

Tusk said Poland should make sure the necessary conditions are ready ahead of time, including a place for US forces to be stationed. In his view, the most reliable option would be a permanent base.

On Tuesday, June 16, the Polish cabinet is set to review a special draft resolution prepared by Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of National Defence Wladyslaw Kosiniak-Kamysz. The document outlines the steps needed to station a permanent US Armed Forces base in Poland.

According to Tusk, the work would cover logistical, financial, organisational and housing infrastructure.

The Polish prime minister also made clear that Warsaw wants to avoid a situation in which other countries begin competing for the right to host a US military base. He argued that if Poland expects a lasting American presence, preparations must begin in advance so that no one can claim the country is unprepared and suggest another location instead.
