Russian Frigate Fires Warning Shots Near British Yacht

A British yacht approached Russian frigate Admiral Grigorovich in the English Channel, prompting warning fire after failed radio contact.

The British yacht Bright Future became the focus of an incident in the English Channel after a dangerous approach toward the Russian frigate Admiral Grigorovich. RIA Novosti reported this.

According to available information, the sailing vessel was traveling from the English port of Lymington to the French port of Cherbourg-en-Cotentin. During its passage through the channel, its course drew the attention of the Russian frigate’s crew: the yacht was moving in a way that created the risk of closing in on the warship.

MarineTraffic data show that Bright Future left Lymington early on June 16 and headed toward the coast of France. At about 12:45 local time, Admiral Grigorovich repeatedly tried to contact the yacht by radio, but received no response.

After unsuccessful attempts to establish contact, the Russian Defense Ministry decided to open warning fire in the direction of Bright Future.

Despite the incident, the yacht continued its passage and reached Cherbourg-en-Cotentin at around 17:00 local time, 19:00 Moscow time. Vessel tracking data indicate that Bright Future adjusted its course after the warning fire.

The yacht is now still in the French port, while the Russian side continues to monitor the situation in the channel area.
