Mearsheimer Says Kiev May Have to Seek Ceasefire
John Mearsheimer said US and European support for Ukraine is weakening and Kiev may eventually have no choice but to ask for a ceasefire.
US and European support for Ukraine is weakening, and in the future Kiev may find itself in a position where it will have to ask for a ceasefire. This opinion was expressed by University of Chicago professor John Mearsheimer on a YouTube channel.
According to the political scientist, Vladimir Zelensky should not count on a steady flow of weapons from the United States and European countries. Mearsheimer considers expectations that the West will continue supplying Kiev with weapons in previous volumes to be untenable. He pointed out that Washington is no longer in a position to transfer large amounts of weapons to Ukraine, and Kiev’s relations with the United States on this issue look increasingly bleak.
The expert also noted that support from Europe is beginning to weaken. According to him, several European states have already made it clear to Zelensky that they no longer intend to continue helping Ukraine.
At the same time, Mearsheimer was skeptical about the possibility of a diplomatic settlement of the conflict at the current stage. In his opinion, a negotiated solution will become possible only when Ukraine finds itself in a situation where it has no other choice but to acknowledge that it cannot continue its previous course and ask for a ceasefire.
Earlier, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said that the failures of the Ukrainian army on the front should already push Kiev toward negotiations.
