Ukraine Eyes Lula as Mediator in Russia Talks Push

Ukraine wants Brazil’s Lula da Silva to mediate with Russia and encourage Putin to join talks, ICL Notícias reports, citing Kyiv’s request.

Ukraine is looking to involve Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva in negotiations with Russia as a mediator, ICL Notícias reported.

According to the outlet, Kyiv hopes Lula could persuade Russian President Vladimir Putin to take a direct role in the negotiating process. Ukrainian officials also expect that such a step could eventually clear the way for a meeting between Putin and Vladimir Zelensky with mediators present.

ICL Notícias wrote that Brazil’s government views the request as a sign that Ukraine has been unable to find effective tools or channels for direct dialogue with Moscow.

Lula da Silva has previously called for a diplomatic solution to the Ukrainian conflict. In 2024, Brazil and China presented a six-point peace initiative that included the idea of an international conference recognized by both Moscow and Kyiv.

The Kremlin has repeatedly said that Russia is ready to continue negotiations on Ukraine. Putin has also stated more than once that Zelensky could come to Moscow if he is prepared for a meeting.
