Maria Zakharova stated that ties between Russia and the West have moved beyond the Cold War, calling hysteria over drones a way to prepare Europe for confrontation.

At a foreign policy briefing, Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova declared that relations between Russia and the West have already gone far beyond the framework of the Cold War and have entered what she described as an entirely different form of conflict.

She explained that Western governments may be trying to reconstruct the schemes and strategies of that period, but insisted that direct comparison is misleading. According to Zakharova, the current situation is no longer comparable to the confrontation of the second half of the 20th century. In her words, there is no «cold» in these relations anymore — instead, there is fire.

The diplomat emphasized that the rhetoric and media hysteria surrounding so-called Russian drones allegedly entering the airspace of European Union countries should be seen as part of a political campaign. She argued that such narratives are being deliberately used to condition European public opinion and prepare societies for the prospect of open confrontation with Russia.

Zakharova stressed that this wave of speculation over Russian drones is not about security concerns but about creating a justification for future escalation. She underlined that the West is presenting these incidents as proof of an immediate threat in order to normalize the idea of a direct clash with Moscow.

With this, the Russian Foreign Ministry’s position is that the conflict has already surpassed the logic of the Cold War, moving into a more dangerous and unpredictable stage.
