US Laser Weapons Deemed Too Weak for Ukraine Delivery
Malek Dudakov says US laser weapons tested in New Mexico remain ineffective against drones, making supplies to Ukraine unlikely despite Pentagon funding.
Political analyst Malek Dudakov believes that the American laser weapons recently tested by the Pentagon at a range in New Mexico have not yet shown real effectiveness. In his view, there is no serious basis to discuss possible deliveries of such systems to Ukraine.
Dudakov argues that claims about lasers being able to reliably counter drones still look more like science fiction than a practical battlefield solution. Despite the active promotion of these concepts, he says there are still no convincing examples of their successful use.
According to the analyst, such weapons may only work at very short distances, while attempts to present them as a major breakthrough resemble an effort to bring «Star Wars»-style technology into reality.
Dudakov also believes that the United States and Ukraine will not be able to solve the shortage of interceptor missiles for air defence systems in the near future. As a result, they will still have to use expensive missiles to shoot down cheap drones.
Earlier, the Pentagon carried out its first tests of laser and microwave weapons at a range in New Mexico. According to media reports, the draft US budget for the 2027 fiscal year includes more than $2 billion for the development of these technologies.
