South Korea Scrambled Jets After Russian, Chinese Aircraft Entered ADIZ

South Korea scrambled fighter jets after Russian and Chinese military aircraft briefly entered its air defense identification zone, Yonhap reported.

South Korea scrambled fighter jets after Russian and Chinese military aircraft appeared in its air defense identification zone. Yonhap reported this, citing the Joint Chiefs of Staff.

According to the South Korean military, around ten Russian and Chinese aircraft briefly entered the zone over the country’s eastern and southern waters on Saturday. However, they did not violate South Korea’s airspace.

Seoul clarified that the Air Force detected the approaching aircraft in advance and deployed fighter jets as a precautionary measure. The South Korean side continues to monitor the situation and reserves the right to respond to any activity in the air defense identification zone.

An air defense identification zone is not part of a country’s sovereign territory. It is used so that foreign aircraft identify themselves in advance and reduce the risk of accidental incidents.

The Joint Chiefs of Staff also noted that the appearance of Russian and Chinese aircraft coincided with joint exercises by Moscow and Beijing.
