Poland to Sign Contracts for Three Swedish Submarines

Poland is set to sign contracts for three Swedish A26 Blekinge submarines under the ORKA program, with the first delivery planned for 2027.

Poland is preparing to finalize the purchase of three new submarines from Sweden. The executive contracts are expected to be signed on Monday in Gdynia, Polish National Defense Minister Wladyslaw Kosiniak-Kamysz said.

The deal concerns A26 Blekinge diesel-electric submarines developed by the Swedish company Saab. Warsaw selected this offer under the ORKA program, which is aimed at renewing Poland’s submarine fleet.

According to Kosiniak-Kamysz, the signing of contracts for three A26 submarines should place the Polish Navy among the leading fleets of the North Atlantic. He also said the new submarines would strengthen the country’s capabilities in covert reconnaissance, monitoring enemy activity and protecting critical infrastructure in the Baltic Sea.

The minister previously said that delivery of the first submarine is planned for 2027.

At present, Poland’s submarine fleet is effectively represented by only one outdated Kobben-class submarine, which the country previously purchased from Sweden.
