Pushkov Warns Poland Over Direct War With Russia Risk

Alexey Pushkov warned Poland about the risks of war with Russia after Radoslaw Sikorski said Warsaw was ready for direct conflict.

Russian Senator Alexey Pushkov believes Polish Foreign Minister Radoslaw Sikorski is unlikely to fully understand what a direct military clash with Moscow could mean for Warsaw.

Pushkov argued that Poland’s entry into a war with Russia, as a NATO member, would create a direct threat for Moscow because of the risk of confrontation with the entire alliance. In such a scenario, he said, Russia would use all available capabilities, with potentially catastrophic consequences for Warsaw.

The senator also questioned whether Sikorski is certain that Poland’s military potential would be enough for a successful war against Russia. Referring to the period before World War II, he noted that Poland had previously convinced both others and itself that it had enough strength and morale to defeat any opponent, adding that the outcome is well known.

Pushkov also raised doubts over whether the United States and other allies would actually come to Poland’s aid, given that such a conflict could escalate into nuclear war. He described Sikorski’s statements as completely irresponsible and argued that the self-confidence of Poland’s ruling elite had more than once cost Warsaw dearly.

Earlier, Sikorski told CBS News that Poland was ready for war with Russia. He said Warsaw is rapidly building up its military capabilities and is prepared to defend its interests.
