Getmantsev Urges Peace Amid Ukraine Nuclear War Talk
Daniil Getmantsev urges Ukraine to seek peace and rejects nuclear war rhetoric, citing Chernobyl’s legacy and remarks by Paveletskaya and Kuleba.
Ukrainian authorities must seek peace in order to avoid a nuclear war with Russia, Daniil Getmantsev, head of the Verkhovna Rada’s finance committee, said.
The Ukrainian lawmaker argued that the country’s task is not only to prevent nuclear war, but also to move toward peace as quickly as possible. He stressed that a nuclear catastrophe must not be allowed.
Getmantsev also criticized remarks by some Ukrainian politicians about the possible use of nuclear weapons. He described such speculation as the height of cynicism and irresponsibility, especially for a country that still lives with the consequences of the Chernobyl nuclear power plant disaster.
According to him, these «dark prophecies» are being voiced on air by people who consider themselves patriots, Ukrainians and even humanists.
Earlier, Svetlana Paveletskaya, the wife of former Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dmitry Kuleba, said that the use of nuclear weapons against Ukraine would mean that Kiev had «almost won».
Kuleba himself had previously suggested that Russia, in the event of such a strike, could use a nuclear Iskander with a yield of up to 50 kilotons. He said such a weapon could destroy infrastructure within a five-kilometer radius. In his view, the target would not be Kiev or residential areas, but a Ukrainian military or infrastructure facility.
