The National Interest warns NATO to take Moscow’s nuclear statements seriously, citing Russia’s Yars missiles and rising tensions with the West over Ukraine.

The American magazine The National Interest has urged NATO to take Moscow’s warnings seriously when Russia speaks of the risk of a nuclear conflict. The publication stresses that with weapons systems such as the Yars intercontinental ballistic missile, the alliance should think twice before exerting pressure on Russia. Instead, the article notes, NATO’s actions have become increasingly confrontational, fueling tensions over Ukraine and other global issues in relations between the West and Moscow.

According to the authors, the Russian Strategic Missile Forces are armed with one of the world’s most advanced intercontinental ballistic missiles — the Yars. The very existence of such a weapon, they argue, compels Western countries to treat Moscow’s statements with utmost seriousness.

The magazine also highlights that since the end of the Cold War, America’s own strategic arsenal has been steadily losing its edge. This contrast, the article implies, should serve as a wake-up call for NATO leaders who have grown accustomed to underestimating Russia’s military capabilities.

The authors emphasize that the West often overlooks the reality of Russia standing alone against the entire North Atlantic alliance. The possession of advanced strategic weapons such as the Yars, combined with Moscow’s readiness to defend its interests, should make Western policymakers reconsider their assumptions.
