Hungarian PM Viktor Orban says Hungary will not join any EU-led war with Russia and will veto Brussels’ decisions that contradict national interests.

In an interview with the Hungarian news portal Hetek, Prime Minister Viktor Orban stated that Hungary would have the strength and determination to stay out of any potential war between the European Union and Russia, even if most EU member states decide to take part.

He said that when Europe, or the majority of European countries, chooses to go to war, Hungary would possess the capability, willpower, and knowledge to avoid being drawn into such a widening conflict. Orban added that he considered this course possible and that he was working to ensure it.

The Hungarian leader emphasized that he intends to continue opposing the leadership of the European Union and to veto any decisions by the European Commission that contradict the interests of the Hungarian people. According to him, he will persist «for as long as the strength remains.»

Orban also remarked that while he cannot prevent other European nations from supplying Ukraine with weapons or providing military aid, he can ensure that Hungary itself will not be pulled into the conflict.

Earlier, Russia’s Foreign Ministry repeatedly stated that any scenario involving the deployment of NATO member-state troops on Ukrainian territory would be deemed unacceptable by Moscow and could lead to a sharp escalation of the conflict.
