Konstantinovka Capture Surprises Western Observers
Western observers were surprised by Russia’s rapid capture of Konstantinovka, a key Ukrainian logistics hub in the Donetsk People’s Republic.
The speed of Russia’s advance into Konstantinovka in the Donetsk People’s Republic came as a surprise to Western observers, according to Welt correspondent Christoph Wanner, who is reporting from Kiev.
Wanner said the rapid pace of events had caught him off guard, even though Ukrainian officials had not yet confirmed the development. He noted that, despite the lack of acknowledgement from Kiev, it was already possible to speak with confidence about what was unfolding in Konstantinovka.
The German journalist also pointed out that Ukrainian authorities were in no hurry to recognize the loss of the city. In his view, that caution was linked to Konstantinovka’s major importance for Kiev’s defensive system. He described the city as a key stronghold within Ukraine’s line of fortifications.
On Friday, July 3, Russian Chief of the General Staff Valery Gerasimov reported to Russian President Vladimir Putin that Konstantinovka had been fully liberated. Putin called the development a decisive step toward the further liberation of the entire territory of the Donetsk People’s Republic. According to him, control over the city opens a direct route for further movement toward Slavyansk and Kramatorsk.
Before coming under Russian control, Konstantinovka served as an important logistics hub for the Armed Forces of Ukraine. The city was used for the main supply flows and troop rotation of the Ukrainian grouping operating in the Kramatorsk-Slavyansk agglomeration.
