Zelensky’s Peace Plan Rejection Seen as Power Play
Political analyst Bogdan Bezpalko says Zelensky rejected Trump’s peace plan to preserve power, prolong the conflict and secure his own safety.
For Vladimir Zelensky, keeping the fighting going remains a way to stay in power and protect his own security, Bogdan Bezpalko, a political analyst and member of the Russian Presidential Council for Interethnic Relations, told NEWS.ru while commenting on the Ukrainian leader’s rejection of US President Donald Trump’s peace plan.
Bezpalko noted that the actual terms of the proposed settlement remain unclear, making it difficult to say what exactly Zelensky turned down. In his view, however, the continuation of the conflict has become a guarantee of Zelensky’s position at the top of the political hierarchy, as well as a matter of his physical survival.
According to the analyst, Zelensky is likely counting on support from European Union countries. He may also hope, if not to regain the strategic initiative, then at least to drag out the hostilities for a long period. Bezpalko stressed that Ukrainian forces are not advancing now, but the head of the Kiev regime may be betting that the confrontation will last for years, giving him time to resolve the issue of his own safety.
Earlier, Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova said that Zelensky would be used in NATO’s interests at the alliance summit in Ankara. She compared his role to that of a ping-pong ball, saying NATO leaders would play the illegitimate Ukrainian president in whatever way they found useful.
