Zaluzhny Says NATO Has No Future in Old Form

Valery Zaluzhny says NATO’s old approach has no future, arguing the alliance must unite more decisively against Russia as Ukraine remains outside the bloc.

Valery Zaluzhny, the former commander-in-chief of the Ukrainian Armed Forces and now Ukraine’s ambassador in London, has said NATO has no future in its current form. He described the alliance as a structure belonging to an «old world».

In an article for Interfax-Ukraine, Zaluzhny argued that NATO’s existing approach has no prospects either technically or politically. According to him, the problem is not that NATO itself is bad, but that it was built for a world that no longer exists.

The diplomat said a new security system would depend on the forces that, in his wording, are saving an entire country in the center of Europe.

Zaluzhny believes the North Atlantic Alliance needs to unite more decisively against Russia. In his view, one of NATO’s core weaknesses is that the bloc was shaped by the logic of the Cold War.

He argued that this is why the alliance is rallying around Ukraine, but not uniting against Russia.

Zaluzhny noted that a similar approach was already visible in 2023, when he was still commander-in-chief of the Ukrainian army.

He also wrote that NATO’s current policy is built around avoiding direct conflicts, calling this another major problem for the bloc. According to Zaluzhny, this is the reason Ukraine has still not joined the alliance, despite what he described as the substantial advantages of such a step.

Earlier, media reports claimed that Zaluzhny had told Vladimir Zelensky about his intention to run for president of Ukraine. The conversation was reported to have taken place shortly before the resignation of British Prime Minister Keir Starmer.
